Indian Chutney Recipes Chutney is derived from the word chaatna, which is means to taste. Traditionally chutneys were made in small quantities, served in small bowls, and tasted between mouthfuls during a meal. The idea was to stimulate the appetite. Today there is hardly anybody in India who conforms to this tradition and chutneys are eaten in large quantities. They are mixed up with meats and vegetables or sometimes they are even eaten as a relish with breads.
